Is there a fee to download eBooks or audiobooks from Media on Demand ?

A valid Lansing Library card is required. Lansing residents may download eBooks and audiobooks for free. The library subscribes on your behalf.
Note: Our contract with Media On Demand (Overdrive) does not allow us to grant access to residents of other towns. Please check with your local library to see if they have access. Visit Overdrive.com to search for your local library.

What is the loan period for eBooks and Audiobooks ?

Downloaded eBooks are available for 14 days. Downloaded audiobooks are available for either 7 or 14 days. Downloaded music and videos are available for 3, 5, or 7 days. Loan periods depend upon loan period option chosen at time of download.

It is possible to return an eBook early, but not audio or video files.


May I return a title early ?

Yes, in Adobe Digital Editions, there is an option to return item. Deleting the item from your device or out of Adobe Digital Editions will not return item. Media On Demand has further instructions.

Are there limits to how much I may check out?

Only 5 downloaded items may be checked out at one time. During the process, you will see prompts reminding you of your current total.


What are the fines for overdue materials?

Downloaded items automatically 'return' themselves on the due date. You never have to worry about fines on downloaded materials.

It is possible to return an eBook early, but not audio or video files.

May I renew materials ?

No, but you may check it out again.


I want material someone else has checked out...What do I do?

eBooks and downloadable audiobooks which are checked out to another patron may be reserved for you, through the Media on Demand website. If a title is already checked out, you will see an option to place a hold. You will receive an email when the item is ready for download. There is a maximum of 5 holds at a time. Staff cannot place items on hold for you.


Do I have to visit the library to download eBooks or Audiobooks ?

No, you don't! (Although we love to see your smiling faces!)

Please visit us if you need help navigating the Media on Demand site, or visit the extensive step-by-step help section, or the special information for First Time Users. Once you know what to do, you can download items from Media on Demand anywhere you can access the Internet, or if your device is wi-fi capable, any wi-fi hotspot.

You can download additional books on vacation, or wherever you go!


Do I have to download software to use Media on Demand ?

Yes, you will need to download a free program onto a computer (Windows or Mac) in order to read ebooks, listen to audiobooks and transfer them onto a device.

eBooks require Adobe Digital Editions; audio and video files require Overdrive Media Console. Kindle users do not need to download the Adobe Digital Editions software.

Is there an app for my device ?

If you are using an Android, Apple, Blackberry or Windows smartphone, iPod, or iPad, free apps are available.

Search your device's app store for 'Overdrive', or view the list of available app formats and download it now!


Do I have to own a special device ?

Most users find it more convenient to download to a portable device (eReader, tablet, digital music player, smartphone, etc.) but you can download directly to your PC or laptop and read the eBook or play the audio file directly on your computer.


Are any eBooks available for my Kindle ?

Which eReader device should I buy ?

This is a very personal decision, but the website ereaderlookup.com can help you narrow your choices based upon price, screen size, and features.
